The short answer is that yes, tongkat ali does work. Tongkat ali works with the majority of men and women between 20-75 years old in order to rejuvenate their health, and is often tested for their toughest health challenges. While the high-potency products of tongkat ali work very well in accomplishing the goals of healthy living, cheap Chinese-produced tongkat ali extracts sold in the United States do not provide the benefits expected. Tongkat ali stands tall compared to other top testosterone supplements for men.

And you might be curious about the science behind the mechanism of action for tongkat ali. In a previous post, we shared tongkat ali’s benefits at great length, supported by science-based data gathered through decades of clinical trials in humans. You might also have read the reviews from consumers saying tongkat ali worked for them, but does it always work? And does it work for women, or for me, when I am not active. This article explains the science of tongkat ali’s action mechanism.

It will help you better understand how tongkat ali works and how it may benefit you. Here is a brief rundown of what is involved.

Tongkat ali contains ingredients like Eurycomanone, a family of quassinoid and alkaloid chemicals, which works by activating hormonally-induced actions in our bodies. Tongkat Ali triggers Luteinzing Hormones (LH), which stimulates Leydig cells in your testes to make testosterone. In women, the Luteinizing Hormones (LH) stimulates steroid hormone production from your ovary, and this helps your menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Tongkat Ali reduces sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which, in turn, delivers higher production of testosterone. SHBG increases when you have a low level of testosterone. Only 1-2% of free, “usable” testosterone is released into your body by the effects of tongkat Ali.

At the same time, Tongkat Ali decreases cortisol, a stress hormone, which decreases the amount of testosterone in our bodies. The mechanism of action increases “free testosterone” production at the same time in our bodies. Therefore, increasing the amount of free testosterone with tongkat Ali provides increased energy, better mood, increased sexual libido, increased motility of the sperm, increased muscle growth, reduced body fat, increased immune system, and reduced stress.

Tongkat Ali Bioactive Ingredients

Eurycomanone

Eurycomanone is the main bioactive chemical found, unique for the plant of the tongkat ali. It belongs to quassinoid family of molecules and has anti-plasmodial, anti-cancer, anti-HIV, and other pharmacological benefits found over the years by scientists.

Polysaccharide

Polysaccharides are polymeric carbohydrates primarily used to store energy and to support cells and tissues. Polysaccharides are found in our bodies, as well as plants. When consumed, they function as food fiber. Studies show sulfate polysaccharides exhibit immunomodulatory, antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral activities including against HIV, herpes, and hepatitis viruses.

Glycosaponin

Saponins are used extensively in vaccine formulations for the regulation and protection of our immune systems. Saponin is also found in Panax ginseng.

However, the levels of saponin are usually 35% or higher in tongkat ali. Studies have shown that saponin lowers cholesterol levels, kills diseases-causing bacteria, eliminates oxidative stress, and suppresses cancer growth.

Protein

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) contains natural plant-based protein, is safe, and can be used to supplement our daily protein needs. Most of the tongkat ali plants found in Malaysia have 0.3868 to 0.9573 mgml(-1) crude protein, making it perfect for vegans looking for an alternate plant-based protein source.

Due to its hormonally-targeted effects, tongkat ali’s efficacy depends heavily on ones age, health status, lifestyle, and other factors. The potency level (i.e., how potent is the extract from tongkat ali) and the dosage per day (i.e., how much tongkat ali you consume each day) will greatly influence the degree of your hormonal response to the bioactive ingredients.

Tongkat ali has been used by men and women alike for centuries. Tongkat ali benefits both men and women by optimizing production of the essential hormones by your glands, which make up a major portion of your endocrine system. Hormones are pathways within the endocrine system that make sure that our bodies are functioning at their best.

And tongkat ali plays a significant role in the primary endocrine system. Tongkat ali is the only herbal supplement clinically tested to profoundly affect total testosterone, free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHT, estrogen, cortisol, dopamine, luteinizing hormone (LH), folate stimulating hormone (FSH), T-cells, naive T-cells, CD4+ cells, uric acid, red blood cells, white blood cells, blood glucose levels, and insulin levels. But how does tongkat ali benefit female health?

Tongkat Ali benefits women in a variety of ways by triggering the release of reproductive key hormones like testosterone, cortisol, and estrogen in different situations where the body needs it the most. Women over the age of 50, who are pre-menopausal, post-menopausal, or who have been diagnosed as having an androgen deficiency can benefit from tongkat ali because of their low levels of testosterone and estrogen. Tongkat ali works for men as well as women, providing an enhanced mood, increased sexual drive, weight loss, and increased muscle strength.
