Cordyceps militaris is a parasitic fungus that grows on caterpillars and other insects. The fungus kills the insect and then sprouts from its body. Cordyceps militaris has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and is prized for its purported health benefits.
Some of the health benefits attributed to cordyceps militaris include improved energy levels, better immune function, and reduced inflammation. Preliminary research suggests that cordyceps militaris may have some benefits, but more research is needed to confirm these findings.
Cordyceps militaris is also sometimes called caterpillar fungus or Tochukasu. It is available in supplement form and can be found online or in health food stores.

Is Cordyceps sinensis a mushroom or is it a parasite?
The answer to this question is a little complicated. Cordyceps sinensis is technically a mushroom, and it is in the same family as mushrooms. Although it definitely is a parasite as well, since it lives off and infects hosts. It’s a good thing that it only affects insects, because if it could infect humans it would be pretty terrifying. Here’s a video that can give you more information on cordyceps.
