Is Reishi Mushroom Good for Schizophrenia?

At the time of writing this article, there have been no scientific studies regarding the benefits of reishi mushroom for schizophrenia. You should always consult your doctor before adding anything into your health regimen that may interact with any current medications or treatment you are receiving.

Reishi is known for providing the mental benefits of providing stress and anxiety relief, but it’s hard to say how these benefits could translate to benefiting someone with schizophrenia.

What’s all the excitement around adaptogenic mushrooms?

There are some nutrient wonders that can be found in mushrooms. If you are involved in the wellness world, or even if you are not, you may have heard of the potential benefits of mushrooms, and in particular, reishi mushrooms.

Mushrooms, a spore-bearing fruity body of a fungus, can be found all over the world, typically growing either above ground or in food sources. With more than 14,000 species of mushrooms, some are better known than others. It is no surprise mushrooms are sought for their different health benefits.

Which Mushroom is Good for Mental Health?

Mushrooms, in general, have been used for centuries in medicinal, cooking, and, most importantly, as a natural medicine. But recently, mushrooms like reishi, lion’s mane, and chaga varieties have been making their way into the mental health care community. Mushrooms may just be the future of wellness.

The reishi mushrooms, known variously as Ganoderma lucidum and lingzhi, are mushrooms found growing in the wet, warm regions of Asia. Reishi mushrooms are known for strengthening your immune system. Studies show reishi is linked with altered genes in white blood cells, which are crucial for the functioning of our immune system. The mushroom is also known to have anti-cancer properties.

Often, cancer patients will consume reishi mushrooms as part of their treatments, as a way of fighting cancer cells. While research is still being done, reishi mushrooms are believed to help with killing tumor cells within the body.

There could be potential benefits to our heart health, blood sugar control, and the increase in antioxidants in the body from mushrooms. Lastly, mushrooms are known to help in combating depression and fatigue.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been looking into ways of relieving my depression, fatigue, and anxiety through natural, healthier alternatives. Reishi mushrooms – available as a powder, in an oil and even as specialty coffees and teas – seemed like an excellent option to try. I tried taking reishi mushrooms for an entire month, in order to help alleviate depression, fatigue, and anxiety.

Heres what I have noticed. In my first week, I picked up the oil bottle and tried one drop.

Without any other things going on, the oil was just slightly bitter, which made it difficult to swallow. I have also tried Reishi 415 powder by Real Mushrooms, which is a bit less bitter than the pure oil, and found that I enjoyed that more. Also, I found that Real Mushrooms 5-Defender Mushroom Blend, which contains Reishi, is a nice resource as well.

The first thing that I noticed with both products that I tried was just how simple and versatile they were all. They could both be added to smoothies, put into a morning joe to make some nice mushroom coffee, and I even tried adding a daily dose into meals that I ate regularly: avocado toast, soups, and salsa.

While in my first week, I did not immediately notice any impact to my mental health, I did notice I enjoyed the ritual of trying the reishi mushrooms in new ways. I looked forward to taking it, and it gave me a healthier, new way to think about my morning routine. It was only during week two that I noticed a small increase in energy, which continued through the day until it was time to relax into bed.
