Does Turkey Tail Mushroom Improve Gut Health?

Yes, turkey tail mushroom does improve gut health and improve the conditions of your gut microbiome. In the world of functional mushrooms, the power of turkey tail to aid the restoration of beneficial bacteria diversity and populations within the intestine is beginning to gain wider recognition. Turkey Tail is a well-known prebiotic source, in large part because of its unique PSP and PSK polysacchariopeptides. Prebiotics are fibers that nourish and strengthen the health-promoting bacteria, helping them thrive in the intestine, contributing to general intestinal health and digestion as well as adaptation.

Is Turkey Tail Mushroom a Probiotic?

Yes, turkey tail mushroom is a probiotic. A 2014 study sought to evaluate the prebiotic effects of the polysacchariopeptide PSP of turkey tail, and the effect it has on gut microbiome. Results showed a clear, consistent shift towards health in the microbiome, with an increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria, in keeping with the claims that Turkey Tail provides prebiotic and probiotic benefits.

A 2013 test-tube study that mirrors those results found that the turkey tail extract modified the guts bacterial composition, increasing populations of the beneficial intestinal bacterial strains Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and decreasing the potentially harmful Clostridium and Staphylococcus.

Turkey Tail Mushroom Helps Immune Cell Activation in the Gut

Studies indicate the PSPs and PSKs found in turkey tail mushrooms exhibit potent immune-supporting effects, potentially activated by their exposure to immune cells in the digestive tract.

Our digestive tract contains primitive immune receptors which specifically recognize a unique beta-D-glucan, which therefore triggers complex immune responses including increased surveillance and antibody production to target pathogens and aspects of the immune system which are not functioning optimally.

We like to say that you need to be and feel nourished in order to thrive, and nurturing your gut is the road to radiant health, and turkey tail mushrooms are an excellent companion for the journey.

De-stressing and focus on cultivating states of calm wherever possible is another great way to help your gut health. Chronic stress can do serious damage to the microbiome of the gut permeability, thanks to many lines of communication between the gut and brain.

Cutting out sugar is another way to improve overall gut health. Overindulging in sugary treats can drastically change your guts microbiome conditions and functions.

Go outside and play! Our ancestors were immersed in nature, and were exposed to much greater diversity of microbial species as a result of their surrounding environment. Research has found that exposure to some microbially rich environments may have protective effects on gut microbiome. This could take the form of going for a hike, kayaking, or doing something where you’re engaging with the great outdoors.

Visit Your Local Farmers Market: It is thought that buying vegetables at an organic farmers market has a beneficial impact on the gut microbiome, since it is likely they were grown in microbe-rich soil, which will then contribute to the increased microbial diversity of our own.

Know your gut: There are a number of different diet regimens that are commonly recommended to improve your gut health, such as going dairy-free or enjoying lots of fermented foods. However, since our microbiomes are so unique, it may be best to work with a professional or have your gut microbiome tested to figure out which approaches may work best for you.
