Lion’s mane mushroom tinctures are definitely the most potent form of consumption to get the incredible health benefits of lion’s mane mushroom. There are plenty of different tincture products out there, and they are honestly not that expensive. We provide access to a few of our favorite brands at the end of this post, but if you have access to fresh lion’s mane, you could consider making your own lion’s mane tinctures. Let’s dig into how.
How to make a lion’s mane mushroom tincture
Here’s how I make tincture in 4 easy steps:
Start with about a quart of mushrooms, fresh or dried (or a combination).
- 1/2 of the mushrooms should be soaked in 190-proof Everclear for two weeks, shaken every day.
- Strain the liquid through a sieve, catching the mushroom solids.
- Remove and discard any stems from the portobello mushrooms. Pour 1 cup vodka (or water) over the remaining mushrooms, then soak for 12 hours in a crockpot set to low heat.
- Remove any mushrooms from the mixture before straining it. Then, using a 3.5:1 water/alcohol ratio (3.5 water/alcohol) or 25-30% alcohol, combine the liquid and infused spirits.

Additional tips for the process
Fresh or dried mushrooms may be used. I now prefer dried over fresh, especially since it makes the alcohol mushroom calculations simpler. Another advantage is that when the alcohol is dried (and reduced in volume), it contains a lot of actual mushroom fiber. Fresh mushrooms add a significant quantity of water to the equation.
To break down the mushrooms, grind them in a grinder. The extract works more efficiently as a result of this. This makes a significant difference.
Everclear is a popular brand among mixologists. Any type of alcohol will do as long as the proportion of alcohol to water in the finished drink is adjusted. Our 3.5:1 ratio was determined on the use of 190-proof spirits. There are several excellent distilled products that you may use instead of 190-proof grain alcohol from your local distillery.
Fill the mason jar half-way with ground ‘shrooms, then enough Everclear to cover the solids by an inch. I measure and then add 3.5 times the amount of water back to the solids in each straining operation (as well as new fresh solids).
If I’m being more careful, I’ll weigh my dried mushrooms before putting them in alcohol and then weigh the wet ones after they’ve been strained and before adding them to water. This will tell me how much alcohol I have carried from the first soak to the second.
We take 2-4 dropperfuls of each mushroom tincture each day, using our tinctures in dropper bottles. Make sure to shake them before using them, as they should have a lot of particulate and milky liquid floating around. I prefer to mix it with coffee in the morning since I’m not a fan of these tinctures flavors, and coffee masks them nicely. For the sake of convenience, we have been combining all of our tinctures into one bottle in equal parts lately.
