There has been little study on health effects, and the safety of using many types of mushroom extracts together may be questioned, especially in individuals with certain medical problems.

Our Picks for Best Mushroom Extracts

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), chaga (Inonotus obliquus), cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis), lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus), and turkey tail are examples of five popular types.

The purported advantages of each mushroom extract range from the obvious to the esoteric. Chaga extract, for example, is supposed to prevent the common cold; improve hair and skin shine; reduce stress-related inflammation; and aid in the treatment of cancer, while reishi extract is supposed to help with sleep, stress reduction, and allergy relief.

Reishi Extract

The fruiting body, mycelium (filaments connecting a group of mushrooms), and woodiness are all characteristics of this fungus. Both the fruiting body and mycelium (filaments connecting a group of mushrooms) are used for medicinal purposes. The immune system is boosted in animals and has an anti-tumor effect, according to research. Reishi’s beta-glucans have been shown to stimulate the immune system in mice, with a possible antitumor action.

In one study, short-term antioxidant activity biomarkers and heart disease risk were investigated. With reishi supplementation, antioxidant activity increased modestly; however, these findings were not statistically significant.

It is unknown if reishi mushroom tincture should be used in higher doses, but it has been shown to combine with medications for high blood pressure and blood clotting.

Chaga Extract

Chaga mushrooms grow in Canada, northern Japan, Siberia, and the northeastern United States. In Russian and Eastern European folk medicine, they’re utilized. Only those collected from living birch trees will contain all of the active chemicals because to environmental conditions.

Chaga has been shown to contain beta-glucans, which have been proven to lower cholesterol. It also contains betulinic acid and polyphenols, both of which are antioxidants. It has also been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Several studies have confirmed the anticancer properties of chaga extract, including one that revealed anticancer effects in human colon cancer cells. Cells from human hepatoma HepG2 were also found to have anticancer effects in a separate research.

The proper dosage of chaga is unknown and has not yet been determined. There’s also uncertainty that chaga might exacerbate bleeding. As a result, it’s ill-advised in those who have bleeding problems or are undergoing surgery.

Lion’s Mane Extract

Lion’s mane extract is derived from the mushroom of the same name, which is native to Asia and North America. This mushroom has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine for its purported health-promoting properties.

Lion’s mane extract is rich in compounds like hericystin and erinacines, which are believed to support cognitive function and nerve regeneration. Some studies have also shown that lion’s mane extract can help reduce inflammation and promote a healthy immune response.

Cordyceps Extract

Cordyceps extract is made from the mushroom Cordyceps sinensis, which is found in the Tibetan plateau. This mushroom has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it was used to treat a variety of ailments.

Cordyceps extract is a rich source of compounds like cordycepin and adenosine, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties. This extract is also thought to improve energy levels and athletic performance.

Turkey Tail Extract

Turkey tail extract is made from the mushroom of the same name, which is found throughout North America and Europe. This mushroom has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it was used to treat a variety of ailments.

Turkey tail extract is rich in compounds like polysaccharides and triterpenoids, which are believed to support immune function. This extract is also thought to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
